Once you’ve built your shelve, it’s important to coat it with a protective finish. This is very easy to do. All I did was paint it white. I was worried about it cracking and so I chose a wood that would be durable enough to last for a long time: Cedar.

As you’re building your DIY shelve, you need to use long nails or screws that are suitable for the type of wood you’re using. It will be relatively difficult to use long nails in soft woods, like pine. If you use too long nails, it can break the wood when you try to fasten it together. So, be careful. Make sure you use quality hardware as well.

Now that you’ve got your shelves built, they’re ready to assemble. First, make sure that you have marked the right spots with chalk. Then, get the alignment correct by placing your shelves at the right angles to one another. Once you’ve aligned them correctly, screw or glue the shelves onto their corresponding walls.

Once you’ve built the shelves and placed them exactly where you wanted them, you have to consider their functionality. Are they simply for books? Can you fit them in the room you’re planning to put them in? Remember that they need to be functional. If you’re using them for books, don’t place them so that they’re right behind every book on the shelf. That makes it impossible for people to reach them!

Once you’ve used your shelves for books and have found that they are sturdy and durable, you can consider adding other types of materials to them. One thing I love about shelves is that you can add pretty much anything to them. As an example, if you’re in the kitchen, you can use a couple of shelves to hold pots and pans and so on. I’m sure there are many other types of things you can do.

So, now you know a little more about awesome DIY wood shelves. The next step is to find some plans to build one. These can easily be found on the Internet or in magazines devoted to home improvement. Just search for “diy wood shelves” to find a whole bunch of great plans. You’ll be amazed at the designs and the styles available!
