Before You Install WordPress Themes
When you want to replace your old WordPress theme with a new WordPress theme it is very easy, because the WordPress theme installation process is just a click and finish. But keep in mind that if you activate a new theme, it will change your site both in terms of appearance and function. And read this article before you change your WordPress theme »5 Things consider before changing WordPress themes.
1. Install WordPress Themes with Search Features
The first way is using search feature. You can only use it if you want to install WordPress themes that are already in the official WordPress.org library. This is the easiest and fastest way for you to do it.
To install with this search feature the first thing you need to do is enter the admin area of your WordPress. Next, click on the Appearance menu »Themes.
Once you are on the Themes page, click on the “Add New” button at the top.
After clicking “Add New”, then you will see a page with lots of WordPress themes displayed in the form of thumbnails. And at the top, there are menu options for themes based on “Featured”, “Popular”, “Latest”, “Favorites” or you can filter themes with various choices.’
In the upper right corner there is a search column that you can use to search for themes according to the name of the theme you want to install. For example, I already have a choice of free themes called “Hueman”. To install it, I type it on the search form with the keyword “Hueman” as shown below.
After that you will see a WordPress theme named “Hueman” displayed and when thumbnail, you highlight the “Details and Preview” button and the “Install and Preview “buttons below. Please click the “Install” button.
WordPress will install the theme and display a successful message. But to use the theme you must activate it by clicking the “Activated” button.
2. Install WordPress Themes with the Upload Method
As I explained in the first method, the search method can only be done if the WordPress theme that you want to install already exists in the WordPress.org directory, but if you want to install WordPress themes from premium WordPress theme providers like Mythemeshop, Elegant themes or other WordPress theme developers, You need to use this second method, which is uploading from the WordPress Admin.
First, please download the .zip file from the premium theme provider or theme from the WordPress theme provider.
Please log in to your WordPress admin area and click Appearance »Themes.
Once you are on the Themes page, click on the Add New button at the top or click “Add New” themes.
On the next page, click on the “Upload Themes” button at the top.
You will be asked to choose the zip file that you downloaded earlier. Select the file that is on your computer and click Install Now.
After your theme is installed, you will see a successful message along with a link to activate and preview the theme.
Click the “Activated” button, and you have successfully installed and activated your WordPress theme. Depending on the theme, it might add additional setting options that you might need to configure either through a theme customizer or through a separate selection panel.
The upload theme function is only available for self-hosted WordPress users. If you use WordPress.com, then you won’t see this option because the upload feature is limited to WordPress.com users.
3. Installing WordPress Theme using FTP
This third method is a method that is a bit more complicated than the 2 methods above and this method is basically not for beginners. But by trying this way you will enhance your experience and knowledge in managing your website. The third way is to install the WordPress theme using FTP.
To get started you have to install FTP software on your computer, you can use Filezilla. After you install FTP software you need to log in using the FTP account that you have obtained from your hosting service provider.
After successfully connecting with the WordPress file on your hosting server. Please enter the “Themes” folder located at (/ wp-content / themes /). Once you are there, just upload your theme folder there.
Remember you have to unzip the folder before you upload the theme using FTP. After you have uploaded your WordPress theme, please re-enter the WordPress admin area and click the Appearance menu »Themes.
You will see your new theme visible in the list. Please click on the “Activated” menu to activate your WordPress theme.
